Call for Papers: "Challenges of Making Peace Researchable" Virtual Research Workshop

Varieties of Peace Network Virtual Research Workshop

"Challenges of making peace researchable - methodological pluralism, opportunities and pitfalls"

June 9-10 2021, 12.30 – 17.30 CET

While there has been a plethora of writing reflecting on the challenges of researching conflict and conducting fieldwork in conflict zones, recently there has been a growing interest in reflecting on the unique dimensions of peace contexts. This development is exciting and calls for the careful development of approaches and methodologies which allow for exploring, theorizing and empirically researching, peace.

Such an evolving interest raises a number of questions. How do peace scholars translate our conceptual frameworks into concrete methodological tools and practices? How do these practices contribute to knowledge about the people and places we study, and about the tools we use? What ethical and moral questions are relevant? What specific challenges do we face as we research peace? The objective of this workshop is to forward the discussions of these topics to a wide range of researchers, all focusing on how to make peace more researchable, and thereby more sensitive to what can be considered as constructive research designs and to the impact our research can have.

This workshop is meant to bring together a wide group of both junior and more senior scholars, who in various ways have been researching peace in their own work. Papers at various stages are welcome. Discussions around our methods, and ensuing difficulties as well as ethical decisions are questions that appear at various stages of the research process, and which oftentimes shift in importance and appearance across the arc of this process. Through ensuring a variety in the stages of both individual projects and scholars, we hope that such discussions will be a significant feature of the workshop.

If you would like to present your research during the workshop, please submit a 200-300 word abstract to Johanna Söderström, Johanna.soderstrom@statsvet.uu.se, no later than March 31st, 2021.
